RIDE OF YOUR LIFE: Hitler and Inge Ley
take a train with other travelers

SHE HAS BEEN described as both “a ravishing blonde” and a “gentle soul”. Inge Spilcker Ley came from a musical family and enjoyed a successful career as an opera singer in Munich in her late teens. Hitler first met her when he became German Chancellor in 1933. He was immediately smitten by the 17-year-old and said “no man could ever be bored in her company”.  He encouraged her relationship and marriage to the middle-aged drunkard Robert Ley, who was head of the German Labor Front (DAF). Before her marriage to Ley, Hitler painted a nude portrait of her and displayed it in one of his private living rooms during which time, it seems, she became infatuated with the Nazi leader.

When their marriage ran into difficulty, Inge sought comfort from Hitler and though he offered her fatherly advice, he rejected her sexual advances. Aged only 26, Inge Ley committed suicide by shooting herself in the head on December 29, 1942. Read review of book here
